Ebola virus disease in West Africa (No.19)

We hereto attach the advisory dated 23 September2014 issued by the Panama Canal Authority (APC). The APC has decided to implement the following actions for the prevention of the Ebola virus disease;

  • The vessels whose previous 10 ports were from an Ebola affected country will be inspected by Maritime Sanitation representatives of the Ministry of Health.
  • In case of suspicion of an Ebola case on board a vessel, the expert physician’s opinion from the Ministry of Health must be received prior to Canal personnel boarding.
  • If Ebola is diagnosed, the vessel will be placed in quarantine until the Ministry of Health issues declaration of safety for boarding.

In addition to the above, all vessels arriving at Canal waters must report any suspected or confirmed diagnoses Ebola virus disease case and any confirmed Ebola case will be handled in accordance withthe International Health Regulations implemented by the World Health Organization.
