Annual Report 2016 issued by ReCAAP ISC

1 February 2017 No.872

The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia information sharing centre (ReCAAP ISC) has issued Annual Report 2016 on piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia. Please refer to its website at www.recaap.org.

According to the report, a total of 85 piracy and armed robbery incidents were reported in 2016 with 58% less compared to 2015 when a total of 203 incidents were reported. The decrease was most apparent in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore where only 2 incidents were reported in 2016 compared to 104 incidents in 2015. However, the increase of incidents involving the abduction of crew from ships while underway in the Sulu-Celebes Sea and waters off eastern Sabah remain a serious concern as we announced in Japan P&I News No. 861 dated 7 December 2016. Therefore, there is no room for complacency. The ReCAAP ISC encourages ship masters and crew to exercise enhanced vigilance.
