The 2nd “Training on Onboard Meals and Health Improvement” Held in the Philippines

4 November 2026
Following the well-received inaugural session held in May this year, the Japan P&I Club held its 2nd “Training on Onboard Meals and Health Improvement” for galley crew members in the Philippines on 20–21 and 22–23 October 2026. Partnering again with Fuji Trading Co., Ltd. (“Fuji Trading”), we conducted a practical programme combining data-driven classroom lectures and cooking sessions.

Daily Dietary Management Directly Linked to Disease Prevention

During the classroom session, Mr. Satoru Honma of the Club’s Loss Prevention & Ship Inspection Department presented analytical findings based on the Club’s accepted claims data. By presenting data that reflects the actual circumstances of the participants—particularly highlighting the notably high incidence rate of diabetes-induced hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases among Filipino seafarers —he emphasised that daily dietary management is directly linked to disease prevention.

Cooking Sessions: Updating Traditional Dishes with a Healthy Twist

During the cooking sessions, Lumpiang Sariwa (fresh spring rolls), a traditional Filipino dish, was featured as one of the recipes. By avoiding the deep-frying process and adopting tofu as a primary protein source, participants practised cooking methods that achieved both nutritional balance and great taste— reducing calories by approximately 50%, sodium by 60% and fat 60% compared to conventional recipes.

Feedback from Participating Galley Crew Members

Upon completing the training, the participating galley crew expressed a renewed sense of pride in their daily cooking and their shared responsibility for their crewmates' health:

“I want to share and discuss the cooking principles learned in this training with all crew members on board.”

“I want to convey and help them understand that improving our diet is not only for the crew themselves, but also for their families.”

“By providing safe, clean, and well-balanced meals every day, I want to protect the health of both the crew and their families.”

“I want to always keep in mind that good health is our greatest asset.”

As a partner sustaining onboard health, the Japan P&I Club will continue to provide support toward fostering an onboard “health culture” and reducing illness risks.
