<Press Release>Japan P&I Club Bolsters Legal Support Capabilities and FD&D Services Amid Increasing Global Maritime Volatility

3 April 2026

To the Members

The global shipping environment is navigating an increasingly volatile landscape. Heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East coupled with the introduction of complex, new decarbonisation regulations, have significantly elevated the legal risks faced by shipowners and operators.

In response to these challenges, Japan P&I Club is pleased to announce a strategic reinforcement of its legal service framework including Freight, Demurrage and Defence (FD&D). This initiative is designed to provide the Members with the legal intelligence and swift decision-making support necessary to manage and resolve disputes effectively.

Key developments in our reinforced support structure are as follows:

1. In-house English Law Expertise for Rapid Legal Assessment
English Law remains the cornerstone of international maritime commerce. To ensure the Members receive the highest standard of guidance, we have strengthened our internal expertise.

Appointment of Dedicated Specialist: We have appointed a highly experienced specialist, profoundly versed in Common Law.

Early-Stage Strategic Support: By providing expert views based on English Law at the earliest stages of a dispute, we enable the Members to clarify legal positions and reach informed commercial decisions swiftly, preventing protracted conflict.

We encourage the Members who do not currently hold FD&D Cover to extend their existing P&I protection to include this reinforced legal framework. Incorporating FD&D Cover into your current entry provides a vital 'second opinion' and a 'robust defence' against increasingly complex maritime disputes.

2. Robust Chinese Maritime Law Network and Practical Seminars
Given the importance of the Asian market, we have further bolstered our capabilities in Chinese maritime jurisdiction.

Enhanced Collaborative Framework: Through strategic alliance with leading maritime law firms in China, we ensure the seamless handling of complex local litigations and regulatory matters.

Chinese Maritime Law Seminar (April–May 2026): We will host a dedicated seminar for our Members, featuring guest speakers from renowned Chinese maritime law firms to provide practical insights into the latest legal developments. Further details are available here (Japanese language only).

3. The Japan P&I Advantage: Japanese Heritage with Global Standards
Our service philosophy is defined by the synergy of "bespoke, personal approach" and "global legal intelligence". As a P&I Club headquartered in Japan, we offer a unique blend of accessibility and reliability.

Pragmatic, Holistic Solutions: Beyond providing theoretical legal advice, our internal specialists leverage their deep understanding of Japanese commercial customs and maritime practices. In collaboration with premier international law firms, we deliver pragmatic, result-oriented solutions tailored to the realities of the shipping industry.

Japan P&I Club remains steadfast in its commitment to being the most accessible and dependable partner for shipowners and operators in Japan, across Asia, in Greece, and throughout the global maritime community.
