US and Canada-Flighted Spongy Moth Complex-2026 Flying Season Starts
We have obtained the joint bulletin for the 2026 season regarding the Flighted Spongy Moth Complex (FSMC) issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The bulletin outlines the requirements for vessels arriving at North American ports from regulated areas—including inspection, certification, and the provision of port of call data—based on data indicating that FSMC populations could reach outbreak levels again in 2026. For further details, please refer to the APHIS-CFIA Joint FSMC Bulletin.
Practical Advice for Vessel Self-Inspection
Based on advice provided by the All Nippon Checkers Corporation, we recommend that crews pay particular attention to the following points during their self-inspections:
Vessels and shipping lines are required to conduct self-inspections prior to entering ports in FSMC-regulated countries. Egg masses are frequently found in areas such as around the accommodation (house), lighting fixtures, and coamings—specifically in shaded spots or where air tends to be stagnant. Please ensure these areas are inspected with care and results are properly recorded.
