[Event Report] Loss Prevention Webinar: “Onboard Safety Culture for Crew Members”

21 October 2026

To the Members

As part of our Member services, the Japan P&I Club held a Loss Prevention Webinar aiming to enhance safety awareness among seafarers and foster a safety culture on board on 29 September 2026.

Under the main theme of "Safety on Board," the webinar focused on specific challenges encountered on the front lines. The programme covered practical topics such as "Bunker Oil Spill Case Study," "Safety First," "Risk Assessment" and "Safety Awareness." The event saw active participation from over 60 seafarers and personnel dedicated to safe operations, including Captains and Chief Engineers, making it a valuable opportunity to share practical knowledge regarding front-line safety.

The overview of the four programmes conducted in the webinar is as follows:

  1. Bunker Oil Spill Case Study
Explained the causes and countermeasures based on three accident case studies, providing specific practical measures to prevent oil leakage during bunkering operations.
  2. Safety First
Analysed seafarer injury claims using statistics on injury locations, types, causes, and trends by vessel type, sharing the root causes of injuries and specific preventive measures.
  3. Risk Assessment
Illustrated practical methods for onboard application starting from fundamental risk management concepts, emphasising the importance of continuous improvement and unified safety management between ship and shore.
  4. Safety Awareness
Highlighted the necessity of going beyond individual efforts by uniting the crew's knowledge for conscious safety actions, and introduced hands-on training using actual equipment aimed at fostering safety habits.

Additionally, all participants provided favourable responses regarding the clarity of the speakers' explanations, indicating that the content was highly relevant and beneficial to their daily operations.
