Amendments of 2022 to the Maritime Labour Convention-Amendments to the Rules for the Inspection and Registration of Maritime Labour Systems and the Related Guidance by ClassNK

Following the approval of the draft amendment to the Maritime Labour Convention at the 110th session of the ILO’s Special Tripartite Committee (STC), which entered into force on 23 December 2024, ClassNK published amendments to the Rules for the Inspection and Registration of Maritime Labour System and the Related Guidance on 20 December 2024 based on the compliance with relevant international conventions, national laws, IACS unified requirements (UR), etc., as well as requests from industry, research and development results, and feedback from damage investigations.

 

The outline of the amendments is as follows.

  1. Add related requirements to include social connectivity as a recreational facility.
  2. Amend relevant requirements to ensure that food and drinking water are provided free of charge during the employment period and a balanced diet is provided.
  3. Amend relevant requirements to require a documented inspection on board by the ship’s master of the quantity, nutritional value, quality and variety of food and drinking water provided.
  4. Amend relevant requirements to ensure that seafarers are provided with appropriately sized personal protective equipment.
  5. Amend relevant requirements for certificates of repatriation and financial security in respect of seafarers’ sickness, injury or death.
