Participation in the MACN’s Member Meeting in Athens

8 June 2026

To the Members

The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) Spring Member Meeting 2026 was held over two days on April 29 and 30 in Athens, Greece. MACN aims to eliminate bribery and corruption in the maritime industry. The event was attended by approximately 200 industry stakeholders who are MACN members. From the Association, Mr. Yusuke Nakahama of the Claims Management Department participated in the meeting.

The theme of this meeting was "From Policy to Practice." The discussions re-emphasised that "integrity," transparency, and public-private cooperation are essential for eradicating corruption. A wide range of discussions and workshops took place, during which specific corruption risks and countermeasures at various ports worldwide were shared.

In one notable session, an active master mariner took the stage to vividly describe the intense pressure felt on the front lines, where seafarers must make the right decisions when faced with unethical demands for money or goods at ports of call. The MACN Secretariat highlighted the importance of "Collective Action" against corruption. They delivered a key message emphasising that sending a Pre-Arrival Notice from vessels or shipping companies to the local MACN Helpdesk before arrival is crucial for reducing and avoiding potential costs. Throughout the conference, participants rallied around the slogan "We Say No To Corruption," reinforcing the vital importance of maintaining a firm policy to refuse unethical demands.

As an MACN member, the Association will continue to support initiatives aimed at safeguarding the integrity and transparency of the maritime industry.
